SMTP Functionality
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol or SMTP is an early protocol for sending email and has been updated to allow clients to authenticate with a username and password. It is used throughout the internet to send email to the server that will allow the recipient to download the email.
All SnapperMail editions send email using SMTP:
- You do not necessarily need a one-to-one relationship between your incoming servers (IMAP or POP) and your outgoing servers (SMTP).
- Any SMTP server that you have access to can be used to send email from any of your accounts. You may choose the same SMTP server for all your accounts.
- Your wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP) should provide you with an
email account and servers to receive and send email. Because the ISP knows
that you are connected via their wireless network, you may not have to supply
a username and password to connect to their SMTP server.
- Other SMTP servers usually require a username and password to authenticate the client to prevent spammers using the servers.
- It is important to know which username and password to use to configure SnapperMail accounts. Usually, the name of the server provides an indication of who should supply the details to you, e.g. smtp.sprintpcs.com would indicate that you need to contact Sprint if you do not know your username and password.
